Solid Waste Management is comparatively a new concept for the state of Jharkhand. Consequently, the level of services is highly inadequate and insufficient. The stakeholders lack perspective and skill to effectively participate in the process. Though they are aware of basic knowledge about the waste, they are not much aware about segregation and composting of waste. The door to door collection and management of PDC is quite a new concept for most of them. Therefore, the CJP proposed comprehensive capacity building programs for stakeholders to develop their perspective and skill.

1.  Orientation on the Concept of Solid Waste Management and CJP : The orientation sessions are targeted to build the perspective of stakeholders on solid waste management and share with them the objectives and strategies of Clean Jharkhand Project. They are also oriented on their respective roles and responsibilities. The orientation sessions are organized for all stakeholders of the project. The target stakeholders for Capacity Building are :

•  Project team

•  Municipal Officials

•  Municipal field staff

•  Animators

•  Pocket Development Committees

2. Exposure Visits : The CJP has been in constant look out for ways to improve itself for better results and motivated efficiency. One such way has been the undertaking of exposure visits to other places. The project arranges for exposure visits not only for its team but also for other people associated with the project, so that they can have a first hand experience of the successful methods prevalent in cities of other states. It has proved very effective medium of Capacity Building as it not only supply them information but also enthuse them with the zeal to experiment and implement it.

The stakeholders for exposure visits are :

3. PDC Management Training : The Pocket Development Committees are most important stakeholder in community based system of solid waste management. It is through them the solid waste management intervention is conceptualized to sustain. Therefore strengthening of PDCs is very important. Therefore through PDC management training their capacity is build to :

  • To develop system for functioning of PDC

  • Financial management of PDC

  • Institutional Management of PDC.

4. Workshops/Seminars: Workshops and seminars have been invincible means of Capacity Building since the time immemorial. They have significantly contributed in bringing change in outlook and understanding of the people. The CJP being "an endeavour of the people, for the people and by the people" has always resorted to this wonderful channel of communication. Workshop and Seminars are organized to share the successful models of Solid Waste Management and viable technologies available by eminent Resource Persons and Experts. The target groups covered are :

  • Media

  • Urban Local bodies

  • Community Leaders

  • Corporate Sector

  • Teachers etc.

5. Research and Documentation : The CJP proposed to establish a information/ Knowledge centre on Solid Waste Management. The continuous research is undertaken to establish the new knowledge, system and information on solid waste management. The information, innovation, systems, best practices and findings of the research is documented in user friendly manner for benefit of stakeholders. To share the knowledge we periodically publishes Articles, News Letter, Manuals for stakeholders like Safai Mitras, Pocket Development Committees etc.

6. Consultancy : The CJP provides support to those willing to implement community based Solid Waste Management interventions.

The solid waste management intervention is being undertaken by Hazaribag & Tilaiya Municipality in guidance of Clean Jharkhand Project.

In Ranchi, the CJP has been providing support to two voluntary organization
1. Creative International and 2. Express Sewa Sansthan in implementing the interventions on solid waste management.
