Promotion of
choice marriage was the punch line of one day
symposium on "Need for inter caste and inter community
marriages" organized by Bharti Samat Samaj Foundation and
Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra at Ranchi office premises on
December 4, 2006. Seminar was organized as part of "Manav
Jodo Abhiyan" and " Samta Adharit Samaj " being undertaken
by NBJK.
Mr. Lavnam Gora,
from Andhra Pradesh, founder of Kula Nirmulana Sangham and
promoter of inter-caste marriages was facilitated by NBJK.
Some couples who opted for inter caste and inter community
marriages challenging the age old traditions were also
facilitated in this occasion. Mr. Balbir Dutt, Chief
Editor, Ranchi Express and Mr. Satish Girija, Secretary,
NBJK presented their views in this regard. Mr. Yovesh
Sharma and Ms. Santa Ben of Bharti Samta Samaj Foundation
honored Mr. Lavnam Gora by presenting him a cheque of Rs.
5000. |

Anti Trafficking day

Nav Bharat
Jagriti Kendra under the auspicious guidance of
Campaign against Child Trafficking (CACT) -
Jharkhand chapter and Jharkhand anti trafficking forum
jointly organized a seminar to observe anti child
trafficking day on 12th December, 2006. Program was
inaugurated by Ms. Veena Sethi, Advocate cum Secretary,
Nari Nyay Niti Sansthan, Hazaribag. She in her inaugural
address remarked that trafficking is a grave issue and
police is least bothered in this direction. Mr. Satish
Girija appealed the organizations to understand magnitude
of the problem and enforce/promote a collective approach
to fight against the issue.

Similarly a
state level workshop entitled "Prevention of
Trafficking and Commercial Exploitation of Children and
Women" was organized on December 18, 2006 at premises of Jaiprakash hall of NBJK office in state capital Ranchi
with financial assistance of CACT- Jharkhand chapter and
Action Aid, India, Patna. Ms. Laxmi Singh, Chairperson,
Women's Commission was chief guest in this occasion.
Speaking on the front she remarked that this is a serious
issue and need to be curbed immediately. She viewed that
for this awareness should be generated, employment should
be generated and migration should be minimized. Several
organizational representatives were present in this
occasion. Mr. Satish Girija, Secretary, NBJK, Mr. Umesh
Rana, Branch Manager, NBJK, Khuti branch and others
expressed their views in this regard. |

Wealth from Waste>> |
|
Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra, Pakur branch with collation
of DRDA, Pakur is playing an important role in
capacitating the villagers to form Vermi-compost beds.
These beds are means of easy earning by converting wealth
from waste. In this process 4 beds are formed which are a
means of income for villages. 200kg of vermi-compost was
sold during honorable Chief Minister's visit at Pakur.
Today villages are earning wealth from waste. |

Parent's training at "Spandan" >> |
|
Functionaries of "SPANDAN" a special school for
children with cerebral palsy and mental retardation
organized a two day intensive training schedule for
parents of the school students. Special instructor
flashed on behavioral change, socialization and
organizational development amidst children mentally
retarded and affected with cerebral palsy. Rights of
the disabled were also discussed in the plenum.
Intensive discussions were carried on rehabilitation
measures for the differently abled. |

Watershed Development Committee>> |

members of watershed committees facilitated by Nav
Bharat Jagriti Kendra under the auspicious support
DRDA, Pakur participated in a three day capacity
building schedule cum exposure visit from 14th to
16th October, 2006. Members visited Shyamal
Mukherjee cattle farm in Rampurhat and Tagore
Society & Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Mahespur.
Capacitation schedule and exposure visit enabled
the members to gain insight about local
participation and management regarding Watershed
Development. |

Workshop on Solid Waste
Management>> |

A day
long workshop on the issue of Solid Waste
Management related to development of PPR of
Hazaribagh, was organized on 20th December, 2006
at Town Hall premises of Hazaribagh by Nav Bharat
Jagriti Kendra in collaboration with municipality
and urban development agency.

Honorable Deputy
Commissioner, Ms. Himani Pandey in her address
stressed in developing and implementing joint plan
of action to keep the surroundings cleaner and
greener. Mr. Rajesh Das, Branch Manager, NBJK
Ranchi, highlighted the statistics of solid waste
management in small and semi-urban areas. Ward
commissioners of Hazaribagh municipality, and
other stakeholders gave their inputs in the PPR. |

Distribution of Plants and
Trees>> |
|

Approximately 2500 plants were distributed amidst
thousands of poor villagers in Pakuria block of Pakur
district by Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra in collaboration
with DRDA, Pakur. Honorable District Collector, Ms.
Pooja Singhal Purwar and BDO, Hari Kumar Keshri
glorified the occasion. Main objective of the program
is to creep up the earning capacity of villagers by
turning brazen land fertile. |

Hameed Street is an area dominated by poor Muslim
families. Few months back it used to be the dirtiest
locality in Ranchi. But a local young lady, Rani,
brought a remarkable transformation. Rani and her
friends somehow came to know about CJP and its work in
adjoining area Ajadnagar. She requested CJP for help.
Community supervisor of the area briefed them about
community based solid waste management. This marked
upsurge of a Pocket Development Committee (PDC)
covering 100 households. Contribution of Rs.10 per
household per month was fixed. Today people of Hameed
Street do not throw garbage in streets instead wait
for garbage collector called Safai Mitra. Community
supervisor is immediately informed if Safai Mitra is
absent. |

Success story of an
adolescent group >> |
|
This is
the story of a remote village
in Churchu Block; Patrangi is a remote village of
Balsagra sub-centre located around 15 km. from Charhi
Additional Primary Health Centre and 30 km. from the
District Head Quarters.
Adolescent groups named Suman-1 and Suman-2 has been
formed in this village since last two years. Regular
meeting with these adolescent group are organized by
the field implementation team. Discussion on RCH
issues and day to day challenges of life are
discussed. Earlier these adolescents were found to be
very shy and unaware regarding various issues, but
since these meetings are carried it has helped them to
come forward and to take participation and learn new
things. They came forward and discussed regarding the
problems they were facing with the health worker
and their peers. Beena Kumari daughter of Shree Bhakur
Saw and Rukmani Devi of
Patrangi village is studying in Std.

7th of middle
school, Patrangi. Her parents had decided to get her
married as she completed 16 years of age. Beena has
been an active member of the adolescent group and was
not happy with her parent's decision. She tried to
convince her parents for not getting her married in
spite of all her efforts she could not succeed to do
so. She wanted to study further and moreover she was
aware with the consequences of early marriage. When
all the efforts made seemed to be a failure, the
members of the adolescent group came forward to
convince Beena’s parents. They together made them
realize the evil consequences of early marriage. Thus
the joint effort of the adolescent group resulted in
stopping Beena’s marriage moreover her parents also
realized their mistake that they were going to make.
