Sampoorna
Kranti Diwas was celebrated under judicious guidance
Hazaribag district Lok Samiti. A meeting on this occasion
was organized at Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra office
premises. Professor Radheshyam Ambasta, chief guest on
this occasion, viewed that Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Narayan
has left behind a question “When will commune earn bread
of honesty?” Mr. Satish Girija, Secretary, NBJK, addressed
the plenum by saying that Jay Prakash Narayan gave slogan
of gender equity, educational equity and promotion of
people’s organization to enunciate peoples participation
in country’s democratic political structure. Mr.
Prabhunath Sharma, Sivsaran Bhai, Mrs. Sheela Kumari and
others participated in the meeting. |

Mission to Educate
Illiterate Women >> |

DFID, New
Delhi assisted PACS programme executed by Nav Bharat
Jagriti Kendra has rolled in Tara Akshar units with a view
to educate illiterate women from the villages. Here
curriculum is designed scientifically to educate
beneficiaries in three slabs with each slab of capacity of
6 women. Laptop with developed software is utilized to
equip women with bare minimum standards of reading,
writing and innumeracy. Till January, 2008, target is to
educate 80 women. Till date 18 women have been educated. |

A
district level Media Conference covering the subject
of Advocacy and Sensitization of the elderly
people was organized under the banner of Nav Bharat
Jagriti Kendra with assistance of Helpage India.
Speaking on the occasion, Sri Devdayal Kuswaha,
former agricultural minister, stressed on the fact
that participation of government is a must and
experience of the aged should be counted in the
nation building process. Prof. Sivdayal Singh,
principal, Markham college, viewed that welfare
schemes benefiting the aged should be executed. Mr
Girija Satish, Executive Director, NBJK, appealed
the media spokesperson to keep an eye in he problem
of the aged and continually pressurize government to
exercise policies benefiting the aged. |

Training on Self Help Group

A two day program on organization management under
the credit plus program was organized at Nav Bharat
Jagriti Kendra office premises on June 6 & 7, 2007. On
the first day women were oriented round the aspects
Self Help Group’s need, goal and objective,
documentation process, set of norms and account
opening process. Second day saw the trainees oriented
around several welfare schemes initiated by Government
authorities. 5o trainees from several villages of
Ichak, Vishungarh and Sadar blocks of Hazaribagh
district participated in the training slint.

Training to Female Health

Nav
Bharat Jagriti Kendra in coordination under
the canvas of National Rural Health Mission
organized ‘Sakhi training’ for women from villages
identified by Lok Utthan Kendra (Katkamsandi), Lok
Prerna Kendra (Simaria) and Stri Shakti (Hazaribag).
Training witnessed knowledge imparted to the
trainees on ground of reproductive and child
health. Mr, Manoj Kumar Singh, Mr. Sandip Tah and
several other Sahiyyas provided relevant
information’s regarding child health,
immunization, roles and responsibilities of a
sakhi, HIV/AIDS as well as family planning.

Seminar on Mitigation of
Female Foeticide and universalization of Birth

A
seminar on mitigation of female foeticide and
universalization of birth registration was
organized under the Kopal project executed by Nav
Bharat Jagriti Kendra and aided by Plan India, New
Delhi. Intensive discussions were held regarding
execution of P.N.D.T, 1994 and it was felt that
mass awareness is required to curb the issue. Mr.
Suresh Kumar, District Statistical officer viewed
that birth registration is a essential and
valuable certificate in an individuals life. It
was cleared that registration is done free of cost
within 21 days of life birth, with a nominal
charge of Rs.5 up to one year and by order of
magistrate with a nominal fee of Rs. 10 after the
term of one year. 60 youths from different
colleges of Hazaribag participated in the seminar. |

Dissemination Workshop>> |

In order
to aid the effectiveness of Birth Registration and
curb the rampant practice of sex selection that lead
to pre-birth elimination of females in Jharkhand, Plan
International- New Delhi in collaboration with Nav
Bharat Jagriti Kendra- Ranchi and Government of
Jharkhand organized a “Media Advocacy Cum
Dissemination Workshop” at Jai Prakash Hall, NBJK,
Ranchi on 16th May’07. The rationale behind organizing
one day workshop was to sensitize, disseminate and
advocate the achievement of Kopal Project focused on
promotion of Universal Birth Registration and
elimination of Female Foeticide to some of the key
stakeholders including media which plays a pivotal
role in communicating such messages.
The inaugural session started with lightening of lamp
by Sri Phuleshwar Ravidas, Secretary, Backward Welfare
Commission, GOJ, Dr. R.R. Pathak, Directorate- RCH,
Sri Kannan, Media Advocacy Officer, Plan India, Sri R.
Sagar Ram, DCLR cum DSO, Gumla, Sri Rajesh Kr. Das,
Branch Head, NBJK & Sri Arshad Hussain, Project
Coordinator, Kopal Project, NBJK. Overall the workshop
was a unique effort in bringing together 67
participants including –media, government, health,
departments and civil society organizations. The
participants presented case studies, shared learning
from new initiatives and planned the future priorities
for shaping and taking forward the public discourse in
order to effectively eliminate the practice of female
foeticide.

Capacity Building of
SHG Leaders on WSH & RSH issues>> |
|
One day
leadership training was organized for SHG group
leaders to enhance their knowledge on WSH issues
so that they can disseminate the knowledge at the
community level on 25th May at Jai Prakash Hall, NBJK,
Ranchi under its Water-Aid India Project on Integrated
Water, Sanitation & Hygiene issues in 16 Slums of
Ranchi township. Facilitators during the training
programme were Mrs. Susmita Bhattacharya, Health
Incharge, NBJK, Ranchi & Mr. Ranjan Gupta, Hygiene
Educator, NBJK, Water-Aid, NBJK, Ranchi who conducted
various sessions to give conceptual clarity on WSH
issues and reproductive & sexual health issues
including menstrual hygiene practices.
The topics dealt in the training included importance
of water and its effective use, endeavor to reduce
water and sanitation related diseases, effective
disposal of solid and liquid waste with special
emphasis on construction of soak pits and toilets,
behavioral and attitudinal changes for relevant
sanitation and hygiene practices, myths and
misconception regarding menstrual cycle, importance of
family planning, demonstration of use of
contraceptives and sexual differences on the basis of
reproductive organs. Various participatory training
methods were used in a play way manner. There were 35
participants in all. The programme proved fruitful by
active participation of the trainees.

Baby show was staged by Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra
under the canvas of Kopal project funded by Plan
India, New Delhi. Dr. Mukta Soren and Dr. Ratna Rani
graced the occasion. 80 women from different villages
assembled to participate in the show. Prizes were
distributed amidst competitors who stood first, second
and third in contention. |

village. I never thought of going to school and getting
educated. I sat in corridor of my house and saw other
