State Level
Rally was organized in Ranchi on the eve of Women's
day. 10, 000 women representing every district of
Jharkhand participated in the rally. Mr. Sachidanand,
State General Secretary, Jharkhand State Lok Samiti,
flagged of the rally near Ranchi Railway Station around
10.30 am. Canvassing streets of Bahu Bazar, Karbala Chowk,
Mission Chowk, Elbert Ekka Chowk and Sahid Chowk the rally
finally ended up as a mass meeting in Morabadi ground. A
memorandum was also submitted to Honorable Governor of
Jharkhand demanding Panchayat elections in state and full
participation of women in Panchayats, effective
implementation of NREGA with simplifying payment of wages
and appropriate fate facilities for women and their
children in workplace, 50% reservation to women,
institutionalising women police station in every
subdivision, simplifying process of birth registration and
disciplinary action against ultrasound clinics and doctors
promoting female foeticide.

In a
similar fashion District Lok Samiti, Nav Bharat
Jagriti Kendra and Stri Sakti jointly organized a
rally cum mass meeting to mark the event. Prof. Rajni
Sharma, Vinoba Bhave University, flagged off the rally
from Zila School premises. Rally shaped up as a mass
meeting after canvassing Guru Gobind Singh road,
Kachari chowk, Annada Chowk, Jama Masjid road, Jhanda
Chowk & Bansi Lal chowk. Women in groups participated
from Churchu, Ichak, Bisungarh, Cauparan etc blocks to
prove their strength and solidarity. |

A Rally
was organized by Hazaribagh district Lok Samiti
and Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra highlighting issues like
NREGA, Female Foeticide and Birth Registration. Rally
originating from Mission School ground canvassed
through the streets of Rabindra Path, Jama Masjid
road, Jhanda Chowk, Guru Gobind Singh road, Annada
Chowk and ended up at premises of Zila School. Here
the rally shaped up as a mass meeting. Government
officials were appealed to keep an eye and take
feasible steps to stop irregularities related to
implementation of NREGA, to implement existing laws to
curb rate of Female Foeticide and to
promote birth registration. Finally a memorandum with
recommendations like weekly payment of wages, priority
to local laborers, birth and death registration free
of cost, regular attendance of employees in
registration department and implementation of existing
laws to eliminate female foeticide was submitted to
Deputy Commissioner. |

|
Students of Bridge Schools of Bahera Asram
and Jhapa jointly organized Children's fair at
Bahera Asram premises with financial assistance from
Oxfam Trust, New Delhi. Mr. Prabhunath Sharma,
inaugurating the fair said that entertainment
coupled with simple learning aids/means can make
education interesting. The event visualized children
performing colourful sports and cultural events. The
students were also rewarded for their performances
from organizational premises. |

Workshop for SWM Plan for Lohardaga Municipality>> |
|
Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra, Ranchi in coordination with
Lohardaga Municipality organized a one day Stakeholder
Workshop on Solid Waste Management Plan for Lohardaga
municipality on 14th February 2007. The workshop was
inaugurated by Sri Virendra Kumar, IAS, Deputy
Commissioner- Lohardaga.
The main purpose behind organizing the workshop was to
acquire views from various stakeholders on SWM plan
for respective municipality. The workshop not only
included briefing about preliminary project report but
also included discussion on the methodologies and
findings of the study carried out during the initial
compliance phase. The technical session was carried
out by Mr. Rajesh Kr. Das, Project Manager & Branch
Head, NBJK, Ranchi, Dr. Prasanjit Mukherjee, Awareness
Coordinator, Miss Smita Sinha, Incharge, Advance
Planning & Documentation division, Ms. Kiran Singh,
Documentation Officer, NBJK.
At the end of the workshop a questionnaire was filled
up by all the participants to find out responses from
various stakeholders in order to know the feedback on
various points covering the waste management issues. |

Regional Workshop on
Bio-medical Waste Management and Solid Waste Management>> |

Toxics Link, New Delhi in coordination with Nav
Bharat Jagriti Kendra, Ranchi organized a Two
Day’s Regional Workshop on “Bio- Medical and Solid
Waste Management”- Perspective and Challenges
covering the states of Jharkhand, Bihar & Eastern
U.P. at Hotel Ashok, Ranchi on 8th and
9th February, 2007.
The Regional workshop had the major objective to
facilitate discussions and information exchange on
Bio-medical and Solid waste management practices
and perspective in the region. It primarily
focused on the following key areas:

Increase awareness on Rules, Regulations
and Procedures.
-
Regional overview on Municipal and Medical
Waste Management.
-
Role and responsibilities of various
stakeholders.
-
Appropriate technological options for the
waste generated.
-
Share knowledge on best practices to
motivate the participants.
-
Develop region specific strategies for
effective waste management practices.
The workshop was planned with a focus on
technical, open sessions and group work. The
inaugural session started with lightening of
lamp by Sri R.K. Srivastava, IAS, Secretary,
Urban Development Department, Sri Tileshwar
Sahu, Chairman, Jharkhand State Pollution
Control Board, Sri Satish Sinha, Chief
Coordinator, Toxics Link, Delhi, Sri Mukesh

Community Toilet made
Functional at Nayak Toli>> |
|
A ten seated Community toilet at Nayak Toli,
Chutia was made functional through immense
community contribution by Water Aid Project,
Ranchi. Prior to the intervention of the project
the 10 seated toilet area was not in use due to
some technical problem and lack of cleanliness.
The nearby area was also very dirty. The situation
was so pathetic that toilet was filled up with
human excreta till 1˝ - 2 feet plus the drains
were also filled with human excreta.
The project with the help of Ranchi Municipal
Corporation and local community took up the task
to make the toilet functional by rectifying the
technical difficulties as well as maintaining
proper cleanliness in the area. NBJK faced great
difficulty in influencing the people but due to
continuous effort people got influenced and
decided to save Rs. 200/ per household.
Following set of Activities were undertaken to
achieve the Vision:-

Series of meeting with community.

Liasioning with Ranchi Municipal Corporation.

Toilet complex renovation work.

Literary Work in Progress>> |
|
Mr. Satish Girija, Secretary, NBJK is in the
road to publish his literary work featuring brief
overview of different funding/supporting agencies of
India and overseas. The book will serve as a useful
handbook covering briefs on funding agencies for
persons engaged in the voluntary sector. |

Birsa Bal Niketan- An
Example>> |
|
Vijay Gope, son of Konda Gope hails from
Sijudih village of Mukdum panchayat of Saraikela
district. His family belongs to the club of ignorant,
illiterate and poverty stricken sections of the
society. His parents were not interested in sending
their children to school. Vijay Gope was very eager to
go to school and get educated like other children. One
day instructor of Lok Hit Sansthan run Birsa Bal
Niketan, operational under the banner of NBJK's Reach
project, gathered all the students. Vijay also joined
the party and from the very next day onwards Vijay
started attending classes. Vijay today is regular
attendant of Birsa Bal Niketan, Sijudih unit looked
after by Lok Hit Sansthan institutionalized in
Saraikela Kharsawan. Vijay feels that Birsa Bal
Niketan was instrumental in showing him the light of
development.. |

Dharna to Create
Awareness>> |
|

Day long
dharna was organized by Bihar State Lok Samiti
representatives in state capital Patna on 17th
January, 07. Dharna was a mean to create awareness
amidst hoi-polloi on the issue of mental health. It
also challenged the government authorities to
implement the existing laws and policies to strengthen
the rehabilitation of differently abled persons. |

Ivan Nut Brown, Coordinator, Action Village India,
paid visit to Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra. During his
stay he monitored and evaluated the progress of
ongoing projects. Achievements in the project run were
sighted & were applauded and appreciated also.
Deviances in the project run were sorted out and
future strategic run was designed. |
